There are so many car selling apps on the market these days that it can be difficult to decide which one to download. This brief article will give you some tips on what to look for during your search. I’ll also be sharing my favorite app per category, along with an overall winner (the winner will be awarded hypothetical “bonus points” that amount to, well, nothing).
Ease of Use
The last thing you want to do is sit around and wade through boring information screens. Look for something that gets good ratings in your App Store and pays attention to the comments that other users have left. This shouldn’t be a frustrating process, so choose something that’s received good feedback for its speed and usability. My choice: Kelly Blue Book has been around for a very long time. So long, in fact, that they’ve earned the right to be referred to as “K.B.B.” in the industry. They solidified their great reputation by being consistent and accurate, so they win this category for their thoroughness and longevity.
You know that old saying, “the best things in life are free”? Well, the same goes for car selling apps. There are several great options that are free and it’s frankly unnecessary to spend money to download something like this. There isn’t a single paid app I’d recommend over a free one. So go ahead, go crazy in the App Store! My Choices (in alphabetical order): Instamotor, Kelly Blue Book, LetGo, OfferUp, TRED, TrueCar.
It’s going to be a HUGE waste of your time if you’re taking hours out of your day to meet with someone who seems interested in your car, only to have them discouraged by the exterior color or interior package. So, choose an app that allows you to take quality photos and upload them straight from your smartphone (the more, the better). My choice: InstaMotor. They allow you to take over 20 photos right from your smartphone. So go ahead, get all the perfect angles of that scented car tree.
To echo the advice I gave above: Choose something that allows you to list all the details of your car. If an app is simply having you list “2012 Subaru Outback” without defining whether it’s a 2.5i or 3.6r Ltd, you’re going to risk losing potential buyers. People want specifics and they want to know exactly what they’re potentially getting into. The app you decide to use should allow you to list all the features that your car came standard with. Bonus points for the ability to highlight aftermarket improvements. My choice? TRED. I checked out their app and did a trial with my own car. I was extremely impressed by their detailed analysis of my vehicle. They had all the package options imaginable, and I was able to accurately list a car that I honestly didn’t think any app would handle.
Shortly after listing, I learned that I was set up with a free mechanical inspection with no cost up front. As well as a personalized phone call to help me set pricing for my car.
Choose an app that allows you to securely, easily and privately communicate with potential buyers. You shouldn’t need to leave the app to sell your car (unless you really want to). My choice: LetGo. I like the user-friendly platform and I enjoy the fact that you can separate your messages into buying/selling folders and block users.
As someone who does marketing for a living, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to give you unsolicited advice in this department. A successful man once said, “If I was down to my last dollar, I’d spend it on marketing”… Well, that man was Bill Gates. And do you know what? He’s right. Now hear me out… It’s in your best interest to choose an app that takes their marketing power seriously. To sell your car faster, more efficiently and for the highest price, you want to do business with a company who knows how to effectively connect your car with the *most appropriate* potential buyers.
My choice in this category? TRED. Selling a car on a linear site like Craiglist isn’t going to get you the same views as listing with a service who uses analytics and marketing to push your vehicle. That’s where TRED really excels. They use analytics and pay for your vehicle to be on every major automotive sales site in the country. That translates to more eyes on your car than any other service can offer you.
My overall pick: TRED.com (+5,000 Bonus Points) I’ve worked in this industry for over ten years now and I’m pretty familiar with a variety of car selling apps and services.
I personally downloaded the TRED app to test it out and was really impressed. I had my car listed within 6 minutes of downloading it from my App Store and was able to take instant photos and load in all of my car’s features. I even had a personalized email in my inbox a few minutes after listing my vehicle, which provided the contact information of a dedicated sales rep. Overall, this one gets an A+ from me for its well-rounded perks, detailed features list, and pleasant user experience.
