The Fast and Furious movie franchise launched car culture into the mainstream, and has become something of a cinematic bible for car lovers. We love the stories, we love the characters, but most importantly, we love their cars. We love their cars so much that their presence in the movies alone makes us want to buy them, but there’s one major hold up: we can’t afford them.
The Fast and Furious franchise has the power to significantly impact the market on certain, more popular cars, so if it was a hero car in a movie, it’s probably really expensive in real life.
For example, a 7,000 mile 1994 Toyota Supra Turbo (albeit an extremely clean one) sold in January of this year for a staggering $121,000, a roughly 60% increase over it’s inflation-adjusted original MSRP. While the Supra is a classic for reasons beyond its movie pedigree (read: 2JZ-GTE), it’s likely that they wouldn’t be fetching such monstrous prices if not for those famous shots of Paul Walker in the driver’s seat. However, I don’t say that to be discouraging, because there are still affordable ways that you can become Faster, and far more Furious with your next car purchase. So without further adieu, here are five Fast and Furious cars that you can actually afford.
1. Mazda RX-7: Fast and Furious 3 (Tokyo Drift)
The Mazda RX-7 is a JDM legend for more reasons than one. Of course, it’s famous for its prominent role in Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift (and appearances in other Fast and Furious films), where it’s driven primarily by Han, but it gets just as much attention for its implementation of a Wankel Rotary-style engine in lieu of a traditional piston engine. That’s right, the RX-7 doesn’t have pistons, or cylinders, or a traditional crankshaft. Instead, it uses a series of rotors to generate power in a way that’s significantly unlike that of the traditional piston engine.
The RX-7 creates 252hp and 217 lb-ft of torque, and can be had with a 5-speed manual gearbox. While arguably just as legendary as the Supra, the RX-7 does not sport nearly as hefty of a price tag, with a few examples coming in below $20,000. However, if you decide to look into the RX-7, be warned that it is heinously unreliable, and the engine sounds like a dentist’s drill. But boy is it cool!
2. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution: Fast and Furious 2
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (dubbed the Evo) was featured in the second installment of the franchise, and was driven primarily by Brian O’Connor. The model used in the movies is known as the Evo VII, the seventh generation of the now famous road-going rally car. In stock form, the Evo VII makes 276hp and 284 lb-ft of torque using a turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine, and can be had with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Also, being a rally car at heart, the Evo is equipped with an extremely intelligent all-wheel drive system, making it a perfectly viable daily driver in areas that see snow in the winter months. A quick web search shows that there are more than a few Evo’s available for under $15,000, making it a great option for those who want some Fast and Furious flair in their lives without breaking the bank (at least as far as cool car purchases go). Just don’t go doing one-eighties on the highway after you sign the papers on yours.
3. Subaru Impreza WRX STi: Fast and Furious 4
Like the aforementioned Evo, the Subaru WRX STi is a Fast and Furious movie car with some rally-car blood, sporting an all wheel drive layout that was enough to keep Mr. O’Connor in check as he sped through the desert in Mexico. Under the hood lies a 2.5L turbocharged boxer 4 cylinder engine producing 295hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, and it is available, of course,
with a 3 pedal configuration. A 2009 car was used in the movie, but the 2007-2014 generation of the STi will fit the bill just a well. The STi was featured heavily in the 4th installment of the franchise, and was piloted mostly by Brian O’Connor. Plenty of used examples can be found online for under $15,000.
- Honda S2000: Fast and Furious 2
The Honda S2000 was a heavily featured car driven by Suki in the second Fast and Furious movie. It comes equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.0L 4-cylinder engine making a tame 247hp and 161 lb-ft of torque (numbers vary depending on market). Now, don’t let those relatively measly power numbers discourage you: the sky high 9,000 rpm redline in conjunction with Honda’s famous VTEC and a six-speed manual makes the S2000 plenty of fun to drive.
Besides, you don’t buy an S2000 for straight line speed, you buy it for its sub-3,000 pound curb weight and 50/50 weight distribution, which is what makes it one of the most fun backroad carving cars ever made. The S2000 comes in on the cheaper side of our list, with tons of examples coming in at under $10k.
5. Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS Spyder: Fast and Furious 2
Rounding out our list is the Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS Spyder, a car whose role was prominent in the second movie of the Fast and Furious series. In all honesty, the Eclipse would be mostly unremarkable if not for Roman Pierce’s piloting of it in the movies, as it’s not all that fast, nor is it terribly furious.
In GTS Spyder trim, it comes with a 3.0L V6 making 210hp, and like all cars on this list, can be had with a manual transmission. The Eclipse is a name with some weight to it in the Mitsubishi world, and that’s more than likely a function of its Hollywood history. It’s also for that reason that in today’s car culture, among most crowds at least, it’s still a cool car to own despite its un-impressiveness on paper.
What’s best about the Eclipse though is its price. It is far and away the cheapest car on this list, with every example I could find coming in below $10,000, with dozens even below $5,000. So if you’re looking to get into a Fast and Furious Car on a tight budget, the Eclipse might be something worth looking at.
